Selank side effects are documented thinly and reported unevenly. The Russian label lists two, trial abstracts list none, and Reddit users describe a different picture again, including paradoxical anxiety and low mood. This page keeps those sources apart, covers the nasal spray and injection separately, and flags what is anecdote.
Key Takeaways
- The Russian over-the-counter label lists only allergic reactions (including delayed ones) and an unpleasant taste when the drops run down the throat. Frequencies are "not established"
- The English abstracts of the Russian trials I read give no adverse-event rates, so any site quoting a percentage for Selank side effects needs a named source
- FDA says Selank acetate may pose an immunogenicity risk for certain routes and that it lacks important human safety information. It is not FDA-approved
- In 15 usable Reddit accounts, 9 described worse mood, anxiety or irritability, 3 had no complaint. The threads were about side effects, so this is not a rate
- Stop and get care for hives, swelling, breathing trouble, thoughts of self-harm, or neurological symptoms
Selank side effects at a glance
The table lines up three sources. A blank in a column means the source does not mention it, which is different from "it does not happen".
Where each Selank side effect shows up
| Russian label | Trial abstracts read | Reddit (n = 15 first-hand) | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Allergic reactions, incl. delayed | Listed; frequency not established | Not mentioned | None reported |
| Unpleasant taste in throat | Listed | Not mentioned | None reported |
| Worse mood, anxiety, irritability | Not listed | Not mentioned | 9 of 15 |
| Sleep disruption | Not listed | Not mentioned | 2 of 15 |
| Headache, dizziness, stomach upset | Not listed | Not mentioned | 2 of 15 |
| Dry eyes or itchy skin near eyes | Not listed | Not mentioned | 2 of 15 |
| Neurological (nerve pain, combined spray) | Not listed | Not mentioned | 1 of 15 |
The mismatch is the point. The label's two items barely appear in Reddit, and the Reddit complaints are not on the label. That does not prove the label wrong: it describes a preserved pharmaceutical solution in a specific population, while Reddit users mostly describe research-grade powder they mixed themselves. It also does not make the Reddit reports representative, because the threads sampled were titled around side effects. For dose context, see our Selank dosage chart; for what the compound is, the Selank peptide guide.
What the label and trials actually document
The Russian instruction for Selank 0.15% nasal drops (revised July 2025, sold without prescription to adults) lists allergic reactions, including delayed ones, and an unpleasant taste when the solution drains into the throat. It states that frequency has not been established. Contraindications are hypersensitivity, pregnancy, breastfeeding and age under 18. It reports no cases of overdose, and says no interaction was established with haloperidol, pentobarbital, hexobarbital, analeptics or ethanol.
The trial record is smaller than most pages imply. A 62-patient comparison with medazepam and a 60-patient comparison with phenazepam reported anxiolytic effects; a 2015 study of 70 patients scored tolerability with a standard side-effect scale and found that adding Selank to phenazepam lowered phenazepam's own side effects, such as sedation and attention and memory problems. A 2012 conference abstract on 20 patients, using 2,700 mcg a day nasally, does not mention adverse events at all. None of the abstracts gives a rate for any Selank-specific effect. Absence from an abstract is not evidence of absence, and the long-term human record is essentially weeks.
A 2026 preprint that mined clinic notes for people using Semax or Selank is the nearest thing to real-world surveillance. Among 49 patients with confirmed use of either peptide, 13 (27%) had a safety concern or adverse-event sentiment in the notes, and isolated dyspnea, palpitations and flushing appeared during overlapping periods. It pools two peptides, has not been peer reviewed, and says it was not designed to measure harm, so treat it as a signal that use is rising, not as an incidence figure.
FDA status and why purity is a side-effect issue
Selank is not approved by the FDA. The agency's compounding safety page lists Selank acetate (TP-7) as nominated and later withdrawn, with this reasoning: it "may pose risk for immunogenicity for certain routes of administration" because of "the potential for aggregation and peptide-related impurities," and FDA "lacks important information regarding any safety issues" in humans. Immunogenicity means the body mounting an immune response to the product or its impurities. That concern is about manufacturing quality as much as the molecule, which is why an unlabelled or underfilled vial is a safety question, not only a value one.
I could not verify a current compounding-pharmacy route. One Reddit commenter says a functional medicine clinic prescribes nasal Selank in the US; that is unverified.
Nasal spray side effects
Nasal use is the route with a label and a trial, so it is the one with the cleanest documentation. Even so, the label lists nothing local like stinging or dryness. Reddit users do. In a separate dosing thread, a nasal user titrating from 150 to 600 mcg reported a very small amount of dry, sore feeling and more mucus, and called it not uncomfortable. Another account reported that a Selank and Semax spray dried the skin around the eyes and made it itchy, and a third reported dry eyes plus dizziness on day three of 500 mcg sprays.
The most striking nasal report is a combination one. A user mixed Selank and Semax into one spray and developed sharp groin pain that felt like a hernia, a nerve problem according to their doctor, with a brief loss of control of one leg:
"I went back to using them separately instead of combined, and the problem went away." (a r/BodyHackGuide poster, May 2026, link)
A lower dose of the combination brought the pain back more mildly, which the poster took as confirmation. It is one account, nobody else reported it, and a nerve explanation is at least as plausible as a peptide one. It is included because a neurological symptom is the kind of thing worth taking to a clinician, not because it shows a pattern.
Home-made sprays add a variable the label product does not have: preservative and sterility. The label solution contains a preservative (methylparaben). A spray mixed from powder and saline has whatever you put in it. Commenters argue about bacteriostatic versus sterile water for sprays, but I found no data either way.
Injection side effects
For subcutaneous use there is no label and no trial in my search, so everything below is Reddit. Five of the 15 accounts were clearly injected. One found Selank worked well, with effects at about 45 minutes, and the only downside was sometimes feeling unmotivated:
"Only side effects I've experienced is sometimes feeling unmotivated to do things but not in a bad way" (a r/NTNPerformance commenter, Jul 2026, link)
Others were worse. One shot produced headache, dizziness, stomach discomfort, mood swings and anxiety lasting about two days. Someone on 10 units for almost a week felt more down and stopped. A third, on 300 mcg for three days:
"It caused severe anxiety and a skin crawling sensation as if it were an overdose." (a r/NTNPerformance commenter, May 2026, link)
That comment says "RS", which usually means research subject, so it may describe someone else. Injection-site irritation is widely listed for subcutaneous peptides generally, but no Selank-specific rate exists, and only one commenter in this set mentioned any local reaction at all.
What Reddit users report
The file holds 249 items from 12 subreddits, but much of it is about other peptides, vendor chatter or copy-pasted articles. After cleaning there are 15 first-hand Selank accounts from 7 threads and 4 subreddits. Twelve reported some complaint and three reported none, and the threads were titled "side effects" or "worst side effect", so people with problems were more likely to post. That makes these counts a catalogue of what has been mentioned, not an incidence.
What 15 Reddit users said Selank did to them
Mood is the headline: 9 of 15 described worse mood, anxiety, agitation or irritability. By route that split 2 nasal, 3 injected and 4 unstated, so this sample shows no sign that nasal is gentler, which some forum posts claim. Several reports came from people with a history of depression or burnout, and one was on bupropion, dextromethorphan and other medicines; that is a caution about who reports problems, not an established risk factor.
Three accounts were positive or neutral. One user prescribed a nasal product used it only as needed for social anxiety and found it helpful; one injectable user said anxiety was lower after the first cycle; one takes it daily with no issues. Both bad and good experiences can be true for different people, which is why the pattern here is "variable", not "mild".
Paradoxical anxiety and low mood: how users handle it
Selank is marketed as calming, so the most common Reddit complaint is the opposite. What users did about it varied:
- Dose down. One person who sprayed 500 mcg per spray, with two or three sprays on the second day, felt wired and irritable, and reported feeling much more level after one small spray.
- Stop. Several stopped after days to a week.
- Wait. Recovery times ranged from about two days after a single shot, to a week or ten days after a week of sprays, to around two months after a single dose in a person who said it was still improving.
How long Reddit users said a bad Selank reaction lasted
- About 2 days
Single injected shot: headache, dizziness, stomach upset, mood swings - 7 to 10 days
A week of sprays: depressed mood, hunger, early waking; about 80% back after a week - About 2 months
Single dose: depression and agitation; still improving, one account - Not resolved
Ten days of use, felt bad after each dose; still using at time of post
Why this happens is unknown. Commenters offer explanations, such as interactions with antidepressants or GABA effects, but these are guesses. Lab work shows Selank can modulate GABA binding and can block the modulatory activity of diazepam and olanzapine on membranes, and it inhibits enkephalin-degrading enzymes in vitro, so an effect on mood circuits is plausible. That is a mechanism, not a reason any given person reacted.
Interactions and who should avoid it
Documented: the label names no interaction with the five agents listed above. In rats under chronic stress, the Selank and diazepam combination was the most effective at lowering anxiety, which is a reason to treat combining it with a benzodiazepine as an interaction, not a free add-on. In one human trial, Selank added to phenazepam reduced phenazepam's adverse effects, but that ran under psychiatric supervision.
Who should avoid it, going by the label: anyone allergic to it, anyone pregnant or breastfeeding, and anyone under 18. Beyond the label, caution makes sense for people on psychiatric medication, people with a history of depressive episodes, and anyone with a nasal or sinus condition if using a spray. Nothing here is a clearance for those groups; ask a clinician who knows your list.
Where a vial fits in
If you are weighing a research vial, product quality is a side-effect variable. Ascension Peptides lists Selank 10 mg at $50.00 (list $60.00) as of 2026-10-11. Kovera Labs tests every batch for HPLC purity, LC-MS identity, net content, endotoxin, sterility and heavy metals, over 98% of batches pass, and batch COAs are public. US shipping only, USD prices, all sales final, and new customers can use the code PEPTIDEDECK for 50% off. Selank 10 mg at Ascension. It is a research chemical, not for human use.
When to stop and see a clinician
Stop and seek care promptly for hives, swelling of the face or throat, or trouble breathing, which fit the label's allergic reactions. Seek urgent help for thoughts of self-harm or a mood crash, which several Reddit accounts described. See a clinician for nerve pain, weakness, palpitations or chest symptoms, and for anything that lasts more than a few days after stopping. Tell them exactly what you used, the amount, the route and the source, because they cannot judge it otherwise.
Frequently asked questions
What are the side effects of Selank?
The Russian label lists allergic reactions and an unpleasant taste when drops reach the throat. Reddit users also report worse mood, anxiety or irritability, sleep trouble, headache, dizziness, dry eyes or itchy skin around the eyes, and nasal dryness. Trials I read gave no rates.
Is Selank safe?
It is not FDA-approved, and FDA says it lacks important human safety information. Short Russian studies describe it as tolerated, but long-term data are essentially absent, and research-grade products have no regulator checking purity.
Does Selank make anxiety worse?
For some Reddit users, yes: 9 of 15 first-hand accounts described worse mood, anxiety or irritability. The sample is self-selected toward complaints, and others found it calming, so it varies by person.
Are Selank nasal spray side effects different from injection?
The label covers only the nasal form. Local dryness and eye irritation were reported with sprays, while injection reports were mostly mood-related, but the mood complaints appeared on both routes, so the sample shows no clear difference.
How long do Selank side effects last?
Reddit accounts range from about two days to ten days, and one person reported about two months. These are single anecdotes, not durations anyone has measured.
Check what you are actually using
Many of the reported problems could come from dose, mixing or the vial itself, none of which anyone can verify from outside. Ascension Peptides lists Selank 10 mg at $50.00 as of 2026-10-11 with public batch COAs from Kovera Labs, US shipping only and no returns. Whatever you do, start with a clinician if you take other medicines.
